Makers of Heart Bypass Surgery Drug Cardioplegia Settle Wrongful Death Suits for $5.5 Million

Four wrongful deaths suits, involving the same drug that the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy noted as being contaminated with bacteria in some instances in 2006, have been settled by Central Admixture Pharmacy Services and their parent company B. Braun Medical.  Interestingly, both companies have a fought a protracted court battle to keep the settlement amounts secret, however, as the article title notes, the financial compensation to the loved ones for the deaths tallied to $5.5 million.  The deceased patients, who sought treatment at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, were given tainted Cardioplegia as cardiac patients at the hospital in the summer of 2005.  Following being administered the drug, patients suffered from immediate inflammation, which lead to the deaths of four patients.  In addition, another eleven cardiac patients conditions were worsened during the time the hospital used the tainted drugs from B. Braun and the Central Admixture Pharmacy Services.  Of these cases, all have been settled, except for one.  In all cases, the B. Braun and the Central Admixture companies have denied any wrongdoing in the incidents, illnesses, and deaths.

The Maryland State Board of Pharmacy noted that in March 2006, the plant where the Cardioplegia drugs were being produced, which was in Lanham, Maryland, contained significant departures from federal pharmacy regulations, as well as the presence of bacteria.  For cardiac patients in the state of Maryland or Washington D.C. that have suffered inflammation or infections following their heart procedures, a possible product liability issue may be to blame.  Contact a David S.
