Environmentalists Have Civil Liberties Violated by State Police and Labeled as TerroristsThree Maryland environmentalists, Mike Tidwell, Joshua Tulkin, and a third who wished to remain anonymous, were wrongfully labeled as terrorists by the Maryland State Police, as well as under unwarranted surveillance according to ACLU documents and acknowledgements by the state of Maryland. In a press conference, the individuals lamented the unnecessary and illegal nature of the surveillance, and the fact that they are simply trying to better the state of Maryland. The Maryland State Police have publicly apologized for violating the individuals’ civil liberties and civil rights, as well as offered to show and delete all surveillance files on the three individuals. The three individuals, when under surveillance, were staffers with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, which is a non-violent global warming awareness and control group lobbying for those residents in the state of Maryland concerned about global warming. The three individuals, as well as now 53 other activists in Maryland, were noted as being the subjects of federal violations regarding the surveillance of them and their activities. According to the ACLU, these activities and the passing along of this information to other groups within the federal government were illegal. As an American citizen, you are afforded certain civil liberties and rights, which are provided for by Constitutional law.
